Jar of Hearts

Jar of Hearts

If you are reading this, I am guessing you have probably already found the love of your life.  I remember my nans wise words in my teenage years, “you might have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince”. I don’t think she was necessarily giving me a free pass to go around kissing every frog I met, more that I shouldn’t and didn’t have to settle for the first frog I met.  Don’t settle, keep looking until you find ‘the one’.  The one that lets you be who you are, but makes you want to be the best version of yourself. “The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds” – The Notebook.

I found ‘the one’ thirteen years ago, and for valentine’s day this year I decided to arrange a dinner out. I booked a babysitter and a table at a restaurant we have been wanting to try.  I should probably add that we never go out on Valentine’s day, it is usually the one day of the year that my husband cooks, so I was excited and thinking about what I might wear.  I then discovered my husband will be in Sweden on business that week.  So, for the first time in 13 years we will be apart for valentine’s day.  It is strange because I have never put much emphasis on valentine’s day, but I must admit I do feel a little sad.  I now appreciate the fact that it is the one day where we are reminded to focus on one another and now I am not having that day I feel cheated.  Life often gets in the way, work, family and friends can sometimes take priority and you might not always show your loved one that they are loved. Make sure you remind them why you married them, why you fell in love with them and why you still love them after all these years.

You don’t have to spend vast sums of money to show someone you love them, but a thoughtful personalised gift, something they can keep and cherish is important, like a print of the place you had your first kiss, or a personalised polaroid print of the two of you or this personalised travel scrapbook to preserve all the mementos of your travels together over the years.

You might not want to splash out on a meal out, but for one night make sure you ditch the TV dinner.  Sit at the table, light a candle, have dinner together and really talk to each other.  Talk about how you feel about each other, your hopes and dreams and how together, you can build the future you both desire.  Fill up your jar of hearts on Valentine’s day to ensure you have enough to get you through the difficult times and remember, as Audrey Hepburn said ‘the best thing to hold onto in life is each other’.
